The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was established in 2012 to protect individuals that were brought to the U.S. as children from deportation and provide them with a driver's license, valid Social Security number, and a work permit. It was announced yesterday, September 5th, that the program was being rescinded in these next six months unless Congress comes up with a legislative solution. The consequences of this decision will negatively affect over 800,000 Dreamers across the country that benefit from this program.
Over 6,900 individuals in Oklahoma are DACA beneficiaries. These are people in your neighborhoods, classrooms, work spaces, etc. Please join UCO's Hispanic American Student Association (HASA) this Wednesday, September 13th to stand in solidarity with Dreamers. This event will take place in the blue tent by the Nigh University Center from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Everybody from the community is welcome to attend. We hope to see many allies there.
