At Science Museum Oklahoma’s Boy Scout Science Overnight, Scouts will get a camping experience unlike any other. Scouts will get to work toward a new merit badge, experience live science demonstrations, engage in special hands-on activities, see a Kirkpatrick Planetarium show and camp out among the exhibits. Scout Overnights are exclusively for Scouts and their families!
> Badge Classes
>>Astronomy Badge Class
This class will explore areas of basic astronomical study such as light pollution, binocular and telescope use, identification of zodiac constellations, planets of our solar system, and the composition of stars. The Kirkpatrick Planetarium will be heavily utilized and an outdoor observation session will take place, weather permitting. Not all requirements for this badge can be met in class.
>>Environmental Science Badge Class
This class will cover the necessity of environmental awareness and protection, and model the effects of pollution on our environment. Example activities include an exploration of biodegradable materials, modeling an oil spill, and reviewing an Environmental Impact Statement. This class is not recommended for 1st year boy scouts. Not all requirements for this badge can be met in class.
>>Space Exploration Badge Class
This class will delve into the purpose of space exploration, the methods humans have used to reach and explore space, and discuss the benefits of space exploration for mankind. Activities will include constructing stomp rockets, planning a mission to another body in the solar system to establish a base (and modeling that base), and creating a collector’s card for a space pioneer.
>>Chemistry Badge Class
This class explores how substances interact with one another, and explains how macroscopic changes result from changes on the molecular level. Example activities include the construction of a Cartesian diver, an examination of the interactions of household chemicals, and learning how to read a Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
>>Electricity Badge Class
This class will focus on electrical safety, types of current, and building various types of electrical circuits and components. Not all requirements for this badge can be met in class.
$45 per scout ($10 off per scout if you bring 10+), $25 per adult.
